A Visit to UTRT Community Library in Mpigi, Uganda

I went for a little jaunt out of the city to see the UTRT Community Library in a small town called Mpigi.  Rodgers Shelukindo, the Kwekitui Community Library Librarian, joined me for the visit.  Mpigi is about one hour west of Kampala and is just a hop off the main highway.

We were warmly greeted by Frank, the librarian, who welcomed us with a nice cup of tea.  As she was busy about, Rodgers and I took some time to observe and reflect on the library itself, taking in ideas from what we observed on the walls and how readers used the library.  As lunch hour came around, students started to file in for some free time reading.  Rodgers and I sat with groups of children and read aloud and with the children.  They were very excited to participate in such an activity, as were we!

  1. I am very much impressed with the work that is being done of buliding libraries in communities in Africa. This is one of the ways of bringing knowledge to the people right where they are residing and it is going to impact lives in a long run especially when the people start appying the knowledge they get from the library resources. Talk about sustainability. This is it. We are definitely going to see changes in healthcare, agricultural practices, nutrition, communication, and so forth. Please ACTS, keep up the good work. I am so proud to know that one of my students, Sarah Switzer is involved in this program.
